SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

It's hard to see all there is to do in just one trip

Hip and historic, our boutique hotel in Frederick is in walking distance of award-winning restaurants, cool art galleries and cultural happenings, and craft beers loved by locals. No wonder the National Trust of Historic Preservation recognized the city of Frederick as one of "America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations."

CHAPEL OF THE HOLY CROSS
The Chapel of the Holy Cross first began as a dream from a local rancher Marguerite Brunswig Staude. Along with being a rancher, Marguerite was also a sculptor and her artist side was inspired by the newly constructed Empire State Building in 1932. She dreamed of building such a building, but dedicated as a Catholic church. Marguerite first attempted making this dream a reality in Budapest Hungry. She enlisted Frank Lloyd Wright's son Lloyd Wright to contribute to the project. Unfortunately the rise of World War II prevented that project from proceeding and Marguerite set her sights on America instead for her vision. She chose beautiful Sedona red rocks Richard Hein was chosen this time as design architect and architect August K. Strotz executed the design. They both came from the prestigious firm Anshen & Allen. The land chosen for the project was part of the Coconino National Forest and Marguerite had to get a special permit to build on the land. Previous Senator Barry Goldwater assisted in getting the permit as he believed the project would improve Sedona. The church was finally finished in 1956.

Today over several million people visit the chapel every year. Some visit as part of a holy pilgrimage and others just fascinated by its architectural contemporary style. The chapel itself is open everyday, with the exception of holidays, from 9 am to 5 pm. Parking is limited to 45 spaces, but there is a round about to drop off individuals. The church also features a gift shop run by the St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The gift shop is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. For those seeking religious services they are held every Monday evening at 5 pm. Services for groups can be arranged during the week by contacting them ahead of time.
